Amelia is a medium to large crossbreed who is believed to be around six years old.

Amelia is a sweet and gentle girl with a sad and tragic past. The first known part of her story was of her being rescued from a closing shelter in Romania four years ago when all dogs were destined to be slaughtered. Following that she has been kept safe in two private shelters whilst we worked through a huge list of the dogs that were saved but now, at last, she is here in the UK where we have gotten to know her well enough to start looking for her forever family.

What has deeply saddened us is behaviour that she has displayed that perhaps tells more of her story prior to being in the shelter. When outside Amelia would pace back and forth, six paces each way, along the perimeter fence. This is classic behaviour of a dog that has been confined or restrained for a very long time. The boredom and monotony of such an existence leads to the repetitive pacing. She also has a permanent hole in one side of her face that suggests she was probably impaled there at some time, she had this hole prior to her rescue from that shelter four years ago. As if this is not enough to be sorrowful about she also bears the scar of a ring around her neck where some form of wire collar has been too tightly around her neck.

Onto the positive stuff at last though! Lead training was difficult because of her past trauma but we have finally cracked it and getting her out and about has really helped to combat the pacing behaviour. The mental stimulation of woods walks has awakened a more relaxed version of her. She will need further practise and a quiet rural area to advance in this respect but she is certainly starting to heal. We can only hope that Amelia has several years ahead of her to enjoy to really try to compensate for all that she has suffered.

Amelia gets on well with other dogs but is not particularly bonded to any in her foster home so would probably also be ok as an only dog. She is wary of strangers but enjoys a fuss from people she knows well. She deserves a quiet, stress free environment to continue her recovery.

Amelia fostered Norwich Norfolk.
